Catching Up With Calendar Drawings, Part 3 // A.C

Welcome to the season finale of my 2024 JIYU Monthly calendar drawings! You can find Part 1 (January - April) and Part 2 (May - August) in previous stories. Below you can see spreads for September - December, plus a bonus tour of some notes and backmatter. I don’t know about you, but the past couple months have pounded my writer/reader’s cap flatter than a pancake. I’ll step back and, besides a few captions for context, let my notebook speak for itself.

August:

September:

October:

November (my personal favorite. This was the first time I tried alternating colors and I absolutely loved it.):

December:

Here’s my “palette” log, capturing the colors and textures I was drawn to each month using washi tape and stickers:

Next, a few examples of how I used the free pages in the back of the JIYU Monthly. This is the first year I actually filled all of them!

Random thoughts and ink/stamp pad tests:

A running list of songs, because every song I know evaporates from my head the instant I step into a karaoke room:

Notes on a tea tasting:

Tarot card readings and interpretations:

Notes and drawings from foraging for mushrooms:

I did calendar drawings regularly in the past, then stopped for the last couple years. Only after using up a stash of old stickers and tapes in 2023 have I returned to the habit. The verdict? It does take a not-insignificant amount of effort, and of course I end up backdating drawings all the time. But it’s well worth it for me. Something about choosing one specific visual to capture a day really encodes it in my head in a lasting way. Scanning through these pages, I can access far clearer glimpses of my life, both specific memories as well as the general ebb and flow. I’ll definitely be keeping it up in 2025!

As always, thank you to Baum-Kuchen and to you, reader, for allowing me to share, ramble and rave about paper and pen. Stay well out there. See you on the next page.
